Need Overview

Need Name: Expand Terminal Building Phase 2
Type:
Funding Source:
Category:
Sub Category:
Estimated Cost: $10,000,000
Description: Funding for the project is requested in three parts to allow the State of Alaska Statewide Aviation to respond to other critical airport needs throughout the state. This request (Phase 2) will consist of reconstruction and rehabilitation of remaining portions of the terminal not already addressed in Phase 1. The exterior pedestrian canopy will be added to the terminal in this phase, and a new baggage screening system will be completed (TSA OTA funds provided for this component of work).
Priority: Mid
Need Origination: Other
Justification: SIT Airport Terminal has severe overcrowding issues in all of the public areas, as well as the baggage makeup (loading/unloading) area. It was originally constructed in 1969, and had modest additions in 1987 and 2003. Interior modifications were made after 2001 to address critical baggage and passenger security screening requirements; these functions displaced approximately 3,400sf of terminal space. The increased air travel over the past two decades, especially in summer months, is also a major contributor to overcrowding in the terminal. Additionally, infrastructure systems are outdated and inefficient per contemporary codes and standards.
