Estimated Cost:
$20,291,000
Description:
This project consists primarily of the construction of erosion protection structures along the riverbank at the west end of the airport to prevent long-term damage to the runway and airport facilities. However, a limited amount of riverbank reinforcement may cause new erosion problems along the riverbank. Therefore, the cost estimate for this project assumes that erosion protection will be required along the entire north side of the City of Aniak. Some dike reinforcement may also be necessary along the dike at the east end of the City. Initial ideas for erosion control include sheet-pile walls, riprap, and concrete mats. However, the scope of this project will be determined in large part by the erosion control study recommended in the master plan. Because this project will provide protection for both the City of Aniak and ANI, it may be possible to secure funding from a variety of sources.

Justification:
A COE inspection of the Aniak levee was conducted on 9/25/2019. Portions of the levee were rated as unacceptable. The levee provides protection from flooding that may impact airport facilities including the access road and other operational surfaces. As the sea levels rise, maintenance of the levee will be imperative for the airport.
Notes:
AMP 2016 ACOE Inspection 9/25/2019 DOT&PF Paul Janke Inspection comments 5/4/2021 The ownership and management of the levee varies between the city and the state making funding mechanism complex. A cost estimate has not been prepared as of 9/7/2021.
