Justification:
Most of the communities in the route structure with Selawik have runways that meet the state minimum length and width requirements (Kiana and Noorvik). This community has a large population with a high number of enplanements. It is the fastest growing community in the Northwest Arctic Borough. Aircraft operating in this region require longer runways to operate safely. This project will lengthen runway 4/22 and provide for safer operations at Selawik and more efficient use of the entire route structure. While the Northwest Alaska Transportation Plan states the airport must be relocated, the region believes it will be able to extend the existing runway to 4,000 feet, saving considerable cost. This project is also identified as a top ten priority in the 2007-2017 Selawik Comprehensive Plan.
