Need Overview

Need Name: Kaltag SREB Replacement
Type:
Funding Source:
Category:
Sub Category:
Estimated Cost: $2,970,520
Description: Construct a new Snow Removal Equipment Building at the Kaltag Airport.
Priority: Mid
Need Origination: Other
Justification: The existing SREB was built in 1991 and is no longer adequate for the modern equipment stationed there. Currently the SREB is in dire condition due to damage caused by equipment strikes, weathering, and general wear-and-tear over the past 25 years; this creates a hazardous work environment. The destruction is extensive. The primary steel structural member in the front left corner is torn in several places and has been damaged to where it is no longer attached to the foundation. The interior and exterior walls are pierced, dented, and are structurally failing. The dirt floor is an environmental hazard as it cannot contain a spill of hazardous materials such as fuel, engine oil, and hydraulic fluid. The floor also allows moisture to continually intrude into the SREB, spreading mold and other moisture damage, impacting the health of personnel and creating a dangerous work environment. The surface of the dirt floor is uneven and shifts under the weight of the heavy equipment weakening the surrounding structure. The ground contributes to the already large tripping hazard of the housed vehicles and other work equipment. The Kaltag SREB today is currently not large enough nor structurally sound enough to accommodate modern snow removal equipment, and is a great danger to DOT&PF personnel.
