a component of the
Alaska Aviation System Plan

Need Overview

Need Name: Airport Perimeter Fence
Type:
Funding Source:
Category:
Sub Category:
Estimated Cost: $16,390,905
Description: Complete the entire fence line around the airport and provide a service road along the inside border. Airport gates should be rehabilitated and retrofitted with IDMS compliant security systems.
Priority: Short
Need Origination: Inspection
Justification: This project keeps us in compliance with 49 CFR 1542 and in compliance with our WHMP. Moose, bear, deer, coyote, and wolf have been seen on the airport and the FAA has recommended a perimeter fence. On Saturday November 14, 2020 Alaska Airlines struck a bear on landing roll-out. The bear was killed, the aircraft seriously damaged, and we were VERY lucky in that the damage could have been far worse had the jet been in a different phase of takeoff or landing. The WHA, WHMP, WHSV, and FAA Inspectors all recommend a fence.
